BIO
Hawkins Biggins is a visual being who has practiced the art of photography since high school. A graduate of Boston’s New England School of Photography, Hawkins was delighted to return home to pursue her passion for photography on Oahu in 2008. Being back in Hawaii she has pursued her creative dream working as a commercial photographer, artists and teacher.
Over the last ten years Hawkins has enjoyed teaching and leading workshops and photowalks in downtown Honolulu, at Lyon Arboretum and other venues. She dives into the art of seeing at her alma mater Mid Pacific Institute with middle schoolers every summer. More recently, she discovered the joy of teaching seniors and offers classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of Hawaii at Manoa.
When she is not behind a lens, you can find her playing board games with her teenage son, on an urban photowalk with her iPhone, with her nose in a book, dreaming about traveling or lacing up her hiking boots to commune with nature and get muddy along the trail.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Hawkins is drawn to photograph nature and the urban environment because it epitomizes the dichotomy of the struggle of modern existence between isolation and intimacy. She focuses on finding connection and a sense of order in the chaotic cityscape. In an effort to compile the three dimensional experience into one frame, her most recent Digital Art work utilizes layering techniques in Photoshop to create composite images. Working with both nature and architecture, her images blend the natural and man made environment into its essential colors, shapes, forms and textures to in an effort to capture a stronger sense of place.
